As can be seen, Kenya ranks 6th among global avocado producers and is an important importing country for both the Turkish and European markets due to its many advantages.

In another graph, we can see how Kenya's production has been steadily increasing.

As we can read in the graph above, there is an increase of approximately 216% in avocado production from 2011 to 2020.

There are more than 500 avocado varieties identified in the world, but not all avocado varieties can be produced commercially due to various reasons such as nutritional values, production difficulties and post-harvest problems. Despite this, more than 40 avocado varieties are grown commercially in Kenya, with the Hass avocado variety being the main export crop and Fuerte being the preferred variety for commercial processing of avocados. Avocado varieties grown commercially in Kenya include Keitt, Reed, Booth 8, Simmonds, Pinkerton, Nabal, Puebla, Tonnage, Ettinger, Hayes, G6 and G7.

The most preferred variety worldwide is the Hass avocado, which is characterized by a skin color that typically turns black or black with green speckles as it matures. The ripeness of an avocado can be determined by gently squeezing it and when the flesh of the Hass avocado reaches a yellowish-green color, it is considered to be at its most delicious and is served. Again, Hass avocado is the most preferred type of avocado for guacamole production with its intense flavor and creamy flesh. One of the advantages of the Hass avocado is that it takes a relatively shorter time to ripen and yields more yield per acre.

Fuerte is the avocado type with a significant production volume in Kenya. The Fuerte avocado has a characteristic elongated shape with a shiny and thin skin. It is easily peeled and has a bright green, loose and textured skin. They do not soften as they ripen and have a relatively lower fat content and calories compared to the hard avocado.

We have seen in the graphs above that Kenya has made a great leap forward in avocado production in the last 10 years. In the background of this, we can say that many large agricultural companies in Kenya have entered avocado production and have made great progress in terms of both yield, management and logistics, and today they have a say in the European market and the Middle East market, including countries such as Turkey.

When we look at the reasons why Kenya is preferred in avocado imports compared to other countries, we can see that although many avocado producing countries export avocados in summer and fall, Kenya has a stable production and supply opportunity in every season of the year, which causes importers to trust Kenya.

Kenya's certified processes in avocado production, compliance with international fruit regulations and good management of the components in the supply chain are also among the reasons for preference and trust.
