In 1899, Sonoco Packaging was a team of 12 people working out of a rented warehouse in Hartsville, S.C. Our first product, then called the Southern Novelty Company, was a cone-shaped paper yarn carrier for winding and transporting yarn. Since most textile cones of the day were wooden, paper cones were an innovation. The company quickly became the leading cone manufacturer in the United States.

We continued to diversify our product line and add new operations across the country. In 1923, the Southern Novelty Company name was changed to Sonoco Products Company or "Sonoco" using the first two letters of each word of the original name.

More than 100 years later, we have 22,000 employees working in nearly 300 operations in 32 countries, and we serve some of the world's best-known brands in nearly 85 countries. But we have never left our roots behind.
